New Poverty Legislation Tabled in Parliament

November 6, 2018

Federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Jean-Yves Duclos tabled legislation this week related to the National Poverty Reduction Strategy released earlier this year. The proposed bill would, if passed:
  • formalize poverty reduction targets, at a 20% reduction by 2020 and a 50% reduction by 2030, relative to 2015 levels
  • entrench an Official Poverty Line as a standardized measure of poverty
  • establish an arms-length National Advisory Council on Poverty
