Province Announces Additional $150 Million in Social Services Relief Funding

July 2, 2020

The Ontario government has announced $150 million in funding for municipalities and urban Indigenous community partners to continue to protect vulnerable people from COVID-19. This is the second installment of the Province’s Social Services Relief Fund administered through CHPI (Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative).

Municipalities and Indigenous partners can use the funding to renovate shelters or purchase facilities to ensure enough space for physical distancing in the short term, and to support more sustainable, long-term solutions to homelessness. It can also be used to provide vulnerable people with food, shelter and supplies.

In March, the Province announced an initial $148 million in CHPI funding for municipalities, food banks, homeless shelters, and individuals. Another $52 million expanded the Emergency Assistance program administered through Ontario Works for people in emergency situations and made more support available to social assistance recipients to meet a range of needs.
