City of Vaughan

The City of Vaughan is the first organization in Canada to implement the Innovative Path System (IPS). The IPS was launched at Vaughan City Hall in 2015. The IPS originated in Italy and was created by Talav Systems Inc.  The IPS is a groundbreaking pathway system that provides customized vocalized directional information to people with visual challenges when using the IPS. The customized vocalized directional information is made possible through an electronic chip that is installed in the tiles of the IPS. The user is able to hear the customized messaging through a smart phone and electronic cane provided by the City of Vaughan. In order to provide the user with independence when using the IPS, recently the City of Vaughan established a pilot partnership with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and IBeacon technology. This partnership allows the user to use their own cane and phone when using the IPS.

The customized vocalized directional information is made possible through IBeacon devices installed at Vaughan City Hall. The user is able to hear the customized messaging by downloading an app on their phone.
